Can Homemade or Store-Bought Rotisserie Chicken be Frozen

Yes, you can freeze rotisserie chicken either homemade or from the grocery store.

Both Store, Supermarket or Homemade rotisserie chickens both freeze well. In general, however, the timing for each freezing step will vary. Like taking a homemade rotisserie chicken straight out of the oven will take a longer time to cool to the ambient or ideal temperature for processing or storing prior to freezing.

Typically a store-bought chicken will be warm only as you have transported it home from the store.

Follow our Step by Step Guide Chicken Freezing Table.

  1. Make sure the bags they came in are sealed so they do not leak. Place them into the fridge for overnight storage. This gets them to a safe temperature before you start the freezing process.
  2. When the fresh rotisserie chicken becomes cold remove it from the plastic store container.
  3. Take a large strong freezer-safe bag and check it is clean.
  4. Take a permanent marker and note the date
  5. Take the cold rotisserie chicken and place it inside.
  6. As you close the bag gently and slowly press the sides so that as much of the air is forced out and seal it. This helps to stop freezer burn.  It will also help make the chicken last longer in the freezer if you do not use it within a few weeks.
  7. Finally, put the rotisserie chicken into the freezer.

One final point you may want to remove the chicken skin and put it into the deep freezer separately as you can crisp it up inside the oven as chicken skin has a lovely crispy texture.  To prolong the life you can also use vacuum sealers to remove all the air from the bag.
