What is a Philly cheesesteak?
A Classic Philly cheesesteak is a sandwich that is made from thinly sliced steak (tender) with melted cheese on a sub sandwich roll.

There are literally hundreds of versions of this sandwich including Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes but the best way to make one is to use the classic ingredients well and not too much cheese sauce.

Keep the dish simple and add sweated or caramelized onions and green bell pepper for a little added flavor.

Can I make this dish with other meats?

Instant pot steak sandwiches can be made with any meats, such as chicken, turkey, or pork. The key is to make them tender and tasty with some meat caramelization which goes so well with cheese.

What is the best cheese to use for a Philly Cheesesteak?

The melted cheese is a fundamental ingredient for this American cheesesteak. Look for a cheese that is not too strong in flavor and has medium consistency when melted.

  • Provolone
  • Cheddar
  • Mozzarella cheese (some people like this!)

The great thing about Philly cheesesteak sliders is they are fast and easy to make - it is such a simple recipe made with beef, ground beef and all made in less than half an hour. I love experimenting also with other flavors like Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and even cream cheese.

You can also use Cheese Whiz or American cheese. Provolone is probably the best cheese for this steak sandwich.

Cheesesteaks can be served with or without onions. Let me tell you a secret. The onions my sandwich!!! After you brown the roast all the seasonings and browned bits remain on the bottom of the Instant Pot liner. The onions are then sauteed and pick up all that delicious flavor. I greedily picked each diced onion off of my son's plate and put them in my mouth. They are that good!

I chose a soft hoagie bun that was light and airy on the inside.

Philly CheeseSteak recipe for Sandwiches in your Instant Pot?

These are made in less than minutes and taste just like your favorite sandwich shop! And then thinly sliced steak is much better than the commercial shaved steak- here we use brisket as the instant pot makes it so tender - but you can use ribeye, sirloin, or almost any other steak cut. This method in the instant pot also makes a great gravy mix which can be used as a Philly cheese steak soup base - or even a foundation for Philly cheesesteak pasta!

Ingredients

Scale

1 Tablespoon olive oil

1 green bell pepper sliced (optional)

2 onion medium, sliced

1 garlic clove

2 pounds beef brisket or other steak medium sliced (we will pull the steak apart later)

10 slices of cheese ( 10 slices per 2 people)

1 sprig thyme

1 sprig rosemary

2 bay leaf

1 chilli (optional)

6 cherry tomatoes

2 baby cos lettuce

1/5 cups beef stock

2 sourdough rolls (or roll of your choice)

1 teaspoon salt and pepper for seasoning

Instructions

  1. How To Make Instant Pot Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches
  2. Prepare - cut your brisket into 1 inch big chunky slices. Then roughly slice 1 onion and also peel 1 garlic clove
  3. Heatup: Set your instant pot to SAUTE Hot - it will take about 4 -5 minutes to heat up
  4. Saute: add olive oil and the beef and brown it for 3-5 minutes - then add sliced onion and garlic. Now add the beef stock, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Pressure Cook Cook for 30 minutes and 10 minutes natural release.
  6. Take out and drain the meat
  7. Saute the next thinly sliced onion till just starting to caramelize - you can use the instant pot bowl here or we used a frypan to save cleaning the bowl. After cooking take out the onions and set them aside to use when you plate up.
  8. Cook Beef Now add the beef - choose enough for 2 people and then cook it for about 3-5 minutes on medium-high at least until it browns well. Pull the beef apart as it is so tender - so that it looks like the shaved steak from your favorite sandwich shop.
  9. Cheese Add the cheese on top and turn down the heat and continue to cook until the cheese melts through the beef - see the video. Also, cut the roll in half and toast the cut size in the pan at the same time.
  10. Ready To Eat Philly Cheesesteak is done - plate up with lettuce, pickles, onion and tomatoes and anything else that takes your fancy.
  11. Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak - use the lettuce leaves instead of bread - kindof a keto friendly version!

Notes

If you like your Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches toasted, use and oven and put your open-faced sandwich in on broil - high for a few minutes. But make sure you watch it so it does not burn.
